Planning a clean website migration

The questions we ask before moving a site, app, database, email, or DNS.

Good migrations are boring. The site works, email keeps flowing, DNS changes are planned, and nobody learns about the move from an outage. That kind of migration starts with the right questions.

Before we move anything

  • Where is DNS hosted, and who can change it?
  • How large are the files and databases?
  • Is email hosted with the current provider or somewhere else?
  • Which plugins, cron jobs, queues, or background tasks matter?
  • What is the lowest-risk cutover window?

Why timing varies

A small brochure site can move quickly. A store, busy database, custom app, or mailbox-heavy account needs more planning. We would rather give a realistic estimate than promise a timeline that ignores the work.
